Voice dictation · Cline
Voice dictation for Cline.
Cline used to have a dictation button. It’s gone. Copy That brings voice back without credits: press one button on your iPhone or Apple Watch, talk, and your prompt is pasted into Cline’s chat on your Mac.

Copy that. Pasted into Cline
Cline has no voice input anymore. It had a mic button that sent recordings to Cline’s transcription service using account credits, and removed it in February 2026 (PR #9511, “Remove voice mode UI and disable dictation”). macOS Dictation can be used instead, but saying “new line” sends the message rather than adding a line break (#14514).
As of October 2026.
- No Cline credits spent on speech: transcription runs on your Mac with Whisper.
- Works in Cline for VS Code, JetBrains, the CLI and Cline Desktop: it pastes into whatever is focused.
- One button on your phone or watch instead of a hotkey, and you can talk from across the room.
- Line breaks stay line breaks: the text is pasted, not typed key by key, so nothing gets sent early.
- Push.
One button on your Apple Watch or iPhone.
- Talk.
Say the prompt, anywhere, on any network.
- Paste.
Your Mac transcribes it and pastes it into Cline.
- Does Copy That work with Cline?
- Yes. Copy That pastes your transcribed words into whatever app is in front on your Mac, so it works with Cline with no plugin or setup inside Cline.
- Does Cline have voice input?
- Not anymore. Cline had a credit-based dictation feature and removed it in February 2026 (PR #9511).
- Does dictating into Cline with Copy That use Cline credits?
- No. Transcription runs on your Mac with Whisper, so no audio or credits go through Cline.
- Do my iPhone and Mac need to be on the same Wi-Fi?
- No. Recordings go through your own private iCloud, so your phone can be on cellular in a café while your Mac is at home. The Mac just needs to be awake and online.
- Where is my voice transcribed?
- On your Mac, with Whisper. Audio passes through your own iCloud account and is never sent to a speech-to-text service.
- What does it cost?
- The iPhone and Mac apps are free. The Apple Watch app is a one-time $4.99. There is no subscription.
