Voice dictation · Kilo Code
Voice dictation for Kilo Code.
Kilo Code’s voice transcription is experimental and needs FFmpeg and a speech API. Copy That needs neither: press one button on your iPhone or Apple Watch, talk, and the prompt is pasted into Kilo Code on your Mac.

Copy that. Pasted into Kilo Code
Kilo Code has experimental voice transcription in its VS Code extension: click the mic or hold ⌘K. It needs FFmpeg, and audio goes through the Kilo Gateway (signed in) or an OpenAI-compatible transcription API you configure. It doesn’t work in remote sessions such as SSH, WSL or dev containers.
As of October 2026.
- No FFmpeg, no experimental flag, no transcription API to configure.
- Works when VS Code is connected over SSH or to a dev container: the text is pasted on your Mac.
- Transcribed on your Mac with Whisper, so no audio goes to a speech service and there’s no speech API key to set up.
- One button on your phone or watch instead of a hotkey, and you can talk from across the room.
- Push.
One button on your Apple Watch or iPhone.
- Talk.
Say the prompt, anywhere, on any network.
- Paste.
Your Mac transcribes it and pastes it into Kilo Code.
- Does Copy That work with Kilo Code?
- Yes. Copy That pastes your transcribed words into whatever app is in front on your Mac, so it works with Kilo Code with no plugin or setup inside Kilo Code.
- Does Kilo Code have voice input?
- Yes, as an experiment in the VS Code extension. It needs FFmpeg and either a Kilo sign-in or your own OpenAI-compatible transcription API.
- Does Kilo Code voice work over SSH or in dev containers?
- No. Kilo’s docs say voice transcription isn’t supported in remote environments. Copy That pastes on your Mac, so it works there too.
- Do my iPhone and Mac need to be on the same Wi-Fi?
- No. Recordings go through your own private iCloud, so your phone can be on cellular in a café while your Mac is at home. The Mac just needs to be awake and online.
- Where is my voice transcribed?
- On your Mac, with Whisper. Audio passes through your own iCloud account and is never sent to a speech-to-text service.
- What does it cost?
- The iPhone and Mac apps are free. The Apple Watch app is a one-time $4.99. There is no subscription.
