Fix “No speech detected” in Claude Code.
No speech detected
Unlike “No audio detected”, this means the audio did reach Anthropic’s transcription service, but no words were recognized in it. The microphone works; what it heard didn’t sound like speech in the language Claude Code expected.
- Speak closer to the microphone and cut background noise.
- Set your dictation language in
/config. With no language set, Claude Code expects English. - In hold mode, keep holding until the footer shows
listening…before you start talking.
The dictation language doesn’t match what you’re speaking
Claude Code dictates in the
languagesetting and falls back to English when it’s empty or unsupported. Set it in/config. Supported: Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, French, German, Greek, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish and Ukrainian. From the Claude Code docs.
You started talking before recording began
In hold mode Claude Code detects the held key from key-repeat, so there’s a short warmup: the footer shows
keep holding…and thenlistening…. Words said before that aren’t recorded. Binding push-to-talk to a modifier combination such asmeta+kin~/.claude/keybindings.jsonskips the warmup. From the Claude Code docs.
The microphone is too far away, too quiet or too noisy
A laptop microphone across the room or a noisy café can deliver audio with no recognizable words. Move closer, or use a headset.
From the Claude Code docs. Some users see it with a working microphone too: #38918 is open.

Use your iPhone or Apple Watch as the mic.
Copy That records on your iPhone or Apple Watch, transcribes on your Mac with Whisper, and pastes into Claude Code. Lids, AirPods, input devices and microphone permissions on the Mac stop mattering, because the Mac never records anything.
- What’s the difference between “No speech detected” and “No audio detected from microphone”?
- “No audio detected from microphone” means Claude Code recorded silence, so the problem is on your Mac: the input device, its level or permissions. “No speech detected” means audio reached the transcription service but no words were recognized, so the problem is distance, noise or the language setting.
- Does Claude Code voice dictation work offline?
- No. Claude Code streams the audio to Anthropic’s servers for transcription. It doesn’t use your tokens or count toward your usage limits.
- Is there a way to avoid this entirely?
- Copy That records on your iPhone or Apple Watch, right next to your mouth, transcribes on your Mac with Whisper in the language you speak, and pastes into Claude Code.
